Tata Steel has always taken adequate measures to optimise the use of water with an increased emphasis on water recirculation in all its processes. The primary use of water in a coal mine is to beneficiate coal to remove the ash content at the washeries or Preparation Plants. Water is also used during operations to control air pollution. The river Damodar serves the entire Jharia coalfield and the Division has created a closed loop system in recovery of water from the washeries. Careful planning has resulted in mine water being conveyed directly to water treatment plants. Once treated, the water becomes suitable for domestic use in the residential colonies where Company employees reside. The Company does not use any ground water source for industrial or domestic use. The water for Jamshedpur is drawn from the river Subarnarekha that is perennial in nature like the river Damodar and water abstraction does not have any adverse impact on the eco system.
